The most important, if modest, building in Lea By Backford. Apart from shoeing local horses and repairs to farm machinery, during the 1914/18 war, two forges turned out thousands of horseshoes for the army.
The crest of John Feilden, landowner, 1797-1859, sits above the arched doorway. In its heyday the station had a Station Master, two porters, a signalman, plus coal and animal feed stores. During the 1939-45 war it was used as a store
for oil products and protected by the Home Guard.
